The purpose of the present study was to examine the effects of a 5-week, "high intensity" training protocol on fat-free mass (FFM) and body composition in a group of inactive, untrained men and women. The training protocol consisted of strength training exercises involving one repetition maximum (1RM) weight training performed three times a week. Because of the relatively small number of subjects, FFM data was also evaluated by using allometric scaling techniques. Data were collected at baseline and on days 1, 21, 42, and 56 of the training protocol. At baseline, the untrained women weighed significantly less than the untrained men and both groups had significantly lower mean percent fat values than the trained groups, suggesting that the untrained subjects had a substantially higher degree of fat mass. During the training protocol, both groups lost significant amounts of fat and increased the mean FFM of their body compartments, leading to a significant mean body weight increase that was accompanied by a significant but somewhat smaller mean percent body fat decrease in both the men and women. The mean FFM of both men and women increased by approximately 6%, whereas the mean percent body fat of both groups was reduced by approximately 5%. The results were similar when analyzed using allometric scaling of the data. The data suggest that although absolute differences in FFM values exist between the trained and untrained men and women, relative increases in FFM are generally larger for trained than for untrained groups.
