The "complete analysis of the literature on human attempts at machine recognition reveals that it is quite clear that there is no general way to classify machine attempts at recognizing humans. The attempts have been made with many different kinds of symbols and with many different kinds of analysis. The collected works are catalogued in an extensive review by Liben-Nowell (1994). Much of the research has been done with a few specialized symbols. Figure 2.1 in that review depicts an example.

As we go through the details, you will note that each problem has its own domain. The business problem shown in Figure 2.1 is what you're asking about. It was done with images of dollar bills. It's a relatively clean and easy problem, and there is a large literature on the subject.
